Snake Bites & How to Handle If Bitten

Learn what to do immediately after a snake bite, common signs of venomous bites, and steps to reduce complications.

Why Snake Bites Are an Emergency

Snake bites can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. India alone reports over 50,000 snakebite deaths each year, making it a major public health issue. Fast action can greatly improve chances of survival and recovery.

Not all snake bites inject venom (dry bites), but it’s always safest to treat every bite as serious until a doctor confirms otherwise.

Recognizing a Venomous Snake Bite

What to Do Immediately After a Snake Bite

  1. Call emergency services or get to a hospital immediately. Snake bites need urgent medical care — don’t wait for symptoms to worsen.
  2. Keep the person calm and still. Movement increases venom spread. Reassure them and limit activity.
  3. Position the bitten limb lower than the heart. This helps slow venom movement.
  4. Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing. Swelling can make these items dangerous.
  5. Clean the bite area with water and cover with a clean cloth. Do not apply ice or cut the wound.
  6. Note the snake’s appearance if safe to do so. Color, patterns, and size help doctors choose treatment but don’t try to catch or kill it.

What NOT to Do After a Snake Bite

Aftercare & Hospital Treatment

Doctors may give antivenom depending on the type of snake and symptoms. Patients often need close monitoring for breathing, blood clotting, and organ function. Recovery can take days or weeks depending on the severity.

Remember: early hospital care saves lives. Teach family and friends how to respond — it can make all the difference.
